Seeing the Whole Child: Homeopathy and Autism

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, I am sharing a few things I’ve learned over the years as a homeopath specializing in working with kids that have autism.

  1. Homeopathy doesn’t try to “fix” autism—it supports re-balance, regulation and well-being. The goal of homeopathic support isn’t to change who a child is, but to support deep energetic re-balancing so that important things like sleep, digestion, anxiety, emotional regulation, comfort with senses, communication, and cognitive abilities are optimized. By re-balancing imbalances, children with autism can experience a reduction in limiting symptoms.

  2. Homeopathy doesn’t focus on labels — it focuses on individuals. No two children express the same needs, gifts, or challenges, and we look at the whole person to determine the needed remedy. A meltdown trigger, what the child needs in that moment, what they’re most drawn to, a repetitive movement, a shutdown—these are highly individualized signals to understand that indicate a well matched remedy.

  3. Children with autism usually have layered patterns—developmental, immune, or trauma-related—that homeopathy can gently support. I look at inherited tendencies, birth stories, early suppressions (like frequent antibiotics), infections, or post-vaccine changes — not to blame, but to understand. Many kids with autism are carrying these layers and they can be removed, which can create more ease for the child. Sometimes what seems “just the way they are” is a layer ready to shift that allows more ease for the child.

  4. Many children with autism are highly sensitive physically, emotionally, or spiritually. This may look like a child that is physically uncomfortable because they feel their physical senses too deeply, a child that is deeply attuned to energies, emotions or people around them. Or possibly perceiving things beyond the five senses. Often, there’s a sense of having too porous boundaries. As such, they may need remedies that support physical grounding and containment such as Stramonium, Carcinosin, and Lac humanum.

  5. Healing with homeopathy takes time, is non-linear, and it’s important to celebrate small shifts. Easier transitions, overnight dryness, increased eye contact, a new level of motivation or capability with self care, deeper or undisturbed sleep, more ease in social situations, fewer meltdowns — these are the indications of imbalances re-balancing; these can be cumulative stepping stones towards a state of fewer limitations.

Homeopathic care for kids with autism isn’t about changing who a person is, it’s about bringing more ease to how a person experiences their body and their life.

I get to see amazing and seemingly miraculous shifts for kids continually, and working with children with autism has reminded me to trust that once a body is re-balanced, there’s no telling what kinds of shifts are possible.
