The Holistic Perspective on Chronic Illnesses: More in Common than Different
If you or someone you love is suffering with a complex or chronic condition, then this is for you.
This article was recently published in the prestigious Nature.com journal and is important for a number of reasons. Here are the highlights:
Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs) now affect 1 in 6 children.
NDDs are the result of a combination of genetics AND lifestyle factors (infection, stress, trauma, nutrition, toxins, etc.). Understanding non-genetic factors are critical for NDD prevention and healing!
While the triggers may differ, the ways chronic illnesses present in the body are similar:
A dysregulated immune system
An impaired ribosomal function (this makes the body hyper-reactive to stress)
A down-regulated mitochondrial function (this provides less cellular energy for the body to do it’s work)
Disruptions in the brain circuit and regression of skills
An overactive nervous system
There’s a tipping point at which the body can’t tolerate more stress. That’s when epigenetics flips the switch from “normal” to “not normal” functioning of the internal systems. The onset of autism, PANS, or any other NDD may appear sudden but, upon deeper analysis, is actually the end state of a much longer process.
Acknowledging and understanding the NDD onset process is the foundation of a successful journey to recovery. NDDs are like different doors to the same basic room. For one person, the door is autism, for another it’s PANS/PANDAS, and for another it’s long COVID, and so on. All NDDs are not identical and their presentations are different, shaped by genetics and life history. However, once you step through the doors, the same basic room (internal dysregulation) is revealed.
Understanding layers of the NDD onset process AND how a healing journey progresses through these layers is crucial for a practitioner. Improvement is possible!
