Flu and Cold Support
Suffering from the flu or a severe cold? You’re not alone — rates tend to rise this time of year. Lower humidity leads to drier nasal passages, which can weaken one of the body’s first lines of immune defense: the mucus membranes that help trap and clear viruses. Combined with colder temperatures that drive people indoors and increase close contact, winter creates ideal conditions for the spread of colds and flu.
Absent a complex or chronic condition such as PANS/PANDAS or other forms of immune dysregulation, our bodies are generally well designed to weather periodic acute illnesses. In many cases, supportive care — including well-matched homeopathic remedies — may help ease symptoms and support recovery.
This year, I’m seeing the following remedies indicated more frequently than others:
Arsenicum album - Indicated when symptoms include chilliness, restlessness, anxiety, and exhaustion, often with watery nasal discharge and a dry cough.
Belladonna - Think intensity: sudden onset, high fever, flushed face, heat, red cheeks, possibly glassy eyes, and marked sensitivity to light or noise.
Bryonia - “Worse from any movement.” Indicated when body aches improve with stillness, the cough is dry, and movement increases discomfort or irritability.
Eupatorium perfoliatum - For flu with intense body aches — often described as feeling like the bones are breaking — along with chills, fever, headache, and deep fatigue.
Gelsemium - Indicated when symptoms come on gradually, with heaviness, drowsiness, weakness, and an overall sense of fatigue or dullness.
Hepar sulphuris - Often described as “it feels raw.” Indicated for very painful sore throats that may feel sharp, raw, or splinter-like, sometimes radiating to the ears. Sensitivity and irritability are often prominent.
Influenzinum - A nosode, sometimes called the “imprint” flu remedy. It can be useful at many stages of flu, including:
preventively during flu season (often used monthly during peak months),
after known exposure, or
when illness lingers and doesn’t seem to fully resolve.
It may be helpful when no other clear remedy picture stands out, or when the flu seems to drag on and needs support to complete its course.
Kali bichromicum - Indicated when sinus congestion is prominent, with a heavy, dull feeling and thick, sticky, yellow or green mucus.
Oscillococcinum - Often helpful at the first signs of flu to reduce intensity and duration. It can also be useful during the acute phase — if it still “feels like the flu,” a dose may help support the body’s response.
Rhus toxicodendron - Indicated when there is restlessness and flu-like pain that feels worse at rest and improves with gentle, continued movement.
Dosing: Select the remedy that best fits your symptoms and take 2 doses (usually 2 pellets) 1 hour apart, then wait 4 hours and observe your response. If it’s working, dose as needed up to 3x/day for symptom support. As symptoms shift, move to the next best indicated remedy.
Here are a few general tips for managing flus and colds:
Listen to your body, slow things down, and rest. Make sure to get plenty of sleep. Your body is doing the good work of healing and it takes energy.
Stay hydrated! Warm liquids like herbal teas and soups can be nourishing and hydrating.
Keep warm and avoid exposure to cold or damp environments.
There are many other remedies. If you don’t see one above that fits well, reach out today for an acute appointment for symptom support!
